A PDF’s created or modified date often looks odd for a dull reason. Time zones, printing to PDF, downloads that build the file on the spot, scanners and wrong clocks explain most surprises. Knowing them saves you from worrying about the wrong things, and makes the dates that really don’t fit stand out.
To see a file’s dates, attach it to the free checker on our home page. It reads the file in your browser and never uploads it.
Time zones and summer time
Each date inside a PDF carries its own time zone. A file made in London at 12:12 on a summer afternoon is stored as 12:12 at one hour ahead of UTC. A checker that shows every time in UTC will call it 11:12, which looks an hour out. Ours shows each date in your own time zone, so a UK file reads the way the clock on the wall did.
If someone abroad made the file, you’ll see their time converted to yours, which can even move the date to the day before or after.
Printing or saving as a new PDF
“Print to PDF”, “Save as PDF”, exporting, merging and many compression tools don’t edit a PDF. They write a brand new one. The new file’s created date is the moment it was written, even if the document on the page is years old.
So a 2019 letter printed to PDF today shows today’s created date. That’s normal. It also means the created date tells you when this file was made, not when the words on the page were written.
Documents made when you download them
Many banks, payroll systems and online accounts don’t keep a PDF waiting for you. They build it when you click download. A statement for January downloaded in March shows a created date in March, at the moment of the download. That’s expected, and a fresh download from the source is one of the best ways to check a document.
Scans show when the scan was made
A scanned PDF is a picture of paper. Its dates say when it was scanned, not when the paper was written or signed. A contract signed in 2022 and scanned last week shows last week’s date. The scanner’s or copier’s software usually appears as the app that made it.
Forms, comments and signatures
Filling in a form, adding a comment or a highlight, or adding a signature saves the file again. The modified date moves forward and the file often gains another saved version inside it. A gap between created and modified, on a form someone filled in, is exactly what you’d expect.
A wrong clock
A PDF’s dates come from the clock of the computer or phone that saved it. If that clock was wrong, the dates are wrong too. That’s the usual reason for a modified date earlier than the created date, or a date in the future. It can also be a sign the dates were edited, which is why it’s worth a question when the document matters.
Missing dates
Some apps don’t write dates at all, and privacy tools remove them on purpose before a file is shared. A PDF with no dates can’t be dated from its details. That isn’t proof of anything, but documents from banks, employers and big companies normally carry them, so a bare one is a reason to ask for the original.
When an odd date is worth a question
An odd date matters when no everyday reason fits the document’s story. A few examples:
- A statement the sender says came straight from their bank, but last saved in a general PDF editor days after it was created.
- An invoice dated in March on the page, but created in June and saved several times.
- A file whose second copy of its details still shows an earlier date than the main one.
None of these proves a document was changed. Each is a fair reason to ask how the file was made, to ask for the original, or to check the details with whoever issued it. Creator and Producer explained covers the app names to look at alongside the dates. If you’d like someone to look at a file by hand, Document Check is our paid check for signs of editing or backdating.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my PDF’s created date today?
Because the file was made today: it was printed or saved as a new PDF, or built by a website when you downloaded it. The created date belongs to the file, not to the document on the page.
Why is the time an hour out?
The tool you used is probably showing UTC. In UK summer time that’s an hour behind the clock. Our checker shows each date in your own time zone.
Can the modified date be before the created date?
It shouldn’t be, but it happens, usually because a computer’s clock was wrong. Dates can also be edited, so if the document matters, ask how it was made.
Does emailing a PDF change its dates?
No. Emailing, downloading or copying a PDF leaves the dates inside it alone. Only the date your computer shows for the copy changes.
